Note | Army Book imagery at FindmyPast shows that George enlisted from the Regular Army for the Tank Corps on 21 Aug 1924, when he was recorded as being 18 years and 302 days old. He was a Fitter's Mate by trade. He was discharged on 20 Aug 1936, but the entry suggests that he re-enlisted on 9 Jan 1941. He joined the 3rd Kings Own Hussars, a tank regiment, and was a crew member of one of the 1029 tanks that the allies fielded in Operation Supercharge - the battle of El Alamein. According to research carried out by the late John Younge from Methwold George Alva was killed along with the rest of the crew on the first day of the battle when their tank took a direct hit. |
