James was not in 1847 Directory for Stoke Talmage and therefore presumably arrived there between 1847 and 1851.

The family lived at Manor Farm in the heart of Stoke Talmage. The farm is part of the estate of the Earl of Macclesfield and is still occupied by a tenant farmer. At one time most of the village was part of the estate. Shared note

In 1809 James was a tenant of Thomas Bracey. Between 1812 and 1822 he rented property from the Earl of Macclesfield. Between 1815 and 1821 he had his own property moving to a larger house in 1822. In 1831 he also owned another house occupied by Mr R Dimmock. (Land tax records 1801-1832)

Beneficiary in his father's Will 1818.

Poll Books 1826, 1830 and 1831 show James and his brother John as owning a house and land. By 1837 they owned houses and land.

In 1823 and 1830 Pigot Directory for Oxfordshire, James is listed under Watlington as a Butcher at Shirburn St.

Poll Book 1837 Pyrton Hundred Watlington The Poll of the Electors who voted at the election of the Three Knights of the Shire to serve in the first Parliament of Queen Victoria, for the County of Oxford on the first and second days of August 1837. Lovelock James Lovelock John

In 1844 Pigott's Directory for Watlington, James is listed under Inns & Public Houses as James Lovelock, Hare & Hounds Inn, Market Place. He is also an excise officer.

Appears in Electoral Rolls 1846-1855. James describes his qualification as Freehold Houses in Shirburn St, presumably the Fox and Hounds PH and Butcher's Shop.

Butcher. Living in Stoke Talmage in 1851 census, aged 66, farmer of 200 acres with 8 labourers, with his wife Sarah and son Henry and grandson George. James was a tenant farmer on the Earl of Macclesfield's Estate Shirburn in 1851. Appears in 1861 census living at Stoke Talmage.

Listed in 1853 and 1863 Dutton Allen & Co Directories at Stoke Talmage.

National Probate Calendar 1864 LOVELOCK James Of Stoke Talmage, Oxon. Farmer. Died 22 Jan 1864. Executors Frederick Lovelock of Watlington Oxon, Innkeeper and George Bayliss of Sonning, Berks, Farmer.

James' Will dated 30 June 1860 and proved 18 April 1864 established that he owned the 'Fox & Hounds' (together with 'Washhouse, Cellar, Coal or Woodhouse and the stable and grounds lying between it and my Garden...'] and Butchers Shop [together with 'Slaughter house, barn, stable, outhouse, courts, yards, close and appurtenances ....'] at Watlington and these were left to sons Frederick and George respectively. Frederick also inherited his twenty Wycombe and Thame Railroad shares. Other benefactors were daughters Sarah Baylis and Elizabeth Gibbons, son Henry [inherited household furniture, plate, linen, china and dairy utensils], son in law George Baylis and grandsons George and James. William Godfrey Spyer of Watlington, Auctioneer and his son William Godfrey Leaver Spyer, Chemist appointed as 'protectors' of estates. Son Henry and George Baylis were offered the 'farming business'. Son Frederick and George Baylis were appointed executors. Witnesses: Geo Eyre, Solicitor, Bensington, Oxfordshire and Marguerite Eyre his Wife.

Son Henry and George Baylis do not appear to have taken up the farm tenancy as a new farmer is shown in Directories after James' death and the 1871 census.

In 1901 a Thomas Parker was Licencee of the Fox & Hounds.

The Hare and Hounds in Market Place, Watlington was rumoured to have the pleasure of entertaining John Hampden, leader of the Parliamentary forces in the Civil War, who stayed there on the night before the battle of Chalgrove Field in 1643. He is reputed to have left a chest containing money for the payment of troops in the care of the landlord, Robert Parslowe, before he departed for the battle.  Hampden was fatally wounded and never collected the chest. Robert Parslowe died a wealthy man - too wealthy for the landlord of a small inn. In his will he set up a charity to help the poor of Watlington - the result of a guilty conscience?
