Shared note

Drowned herself and her child at Hammond Island, Queensland. Inquest held.

Torres Straits and Thursday Island Notes. (From Our Correspondent), THURSDAY ISLAND, June 24. A tragedy of quite unusual sadness occurred on the Island last week. Mrs John Flannery, wife of a resident of many years, in it is thought, a fit of temporary insanity, threw herself off the west jetty at about 1 a.m. on Wednesday, holding in her arms her little daughter of five months. The body of the baby, fully dressed, and with no marks of injury on it, was washed up next day at Hammond Island, near the native camp. One of the natives brought word here and the launch Torres, was sent, and returned with the child's body, which, was buried this afternoon. Some of the mother's clothing, torn to atoms, was found on the reef near the hospital on Friday showing that the poor soul fell a victim to the sharks, which abound in this harbour. Mrs. Flannery had two other little girls and much sympathy is felt for them and the poor husband. The dance in aid of the building fund for the new convent was postponed on account of this sad event and will not be held until the Friday of this week. «i»[The Northern Miner (Charters Towers, Qld.) STATE AND INTERSTATE Queensland. Brisbane. Friday. THE Police Department yesterday received a telegram from Thursday Island stating that Mrs. John Flannery who had been under surveillance for the past week as she was suspected of being of unsound mind, on Wednesday eluded her guardians and, taking her eight-months old infant, disappeared. Footprints were found near a Little Jetty, and a scream was heard in the locality about half an hour after the time Mrs. Flannery disappeared from home. An exhaustive search was made by the police and soldiers, but no trace of the missing woman was found. It is believed she and the child have been drowned. The search is being continued. «i»[The Western Champion and General Advertiser for the Central-Western Districts (Barcaldine, Qld.), Sat 22 Jun 1912 Page 8: trove.nla.gov.au]«/i»
