GREAT SAVE BY GUNDAGAI FIRE BRIGADE Many Business Houses Threatened

Working skillfully and with no sign of panic, the Gundagai Fire Brigade effected a remarkable save when a conflagration threatened to destroy completely one of the main shopping centres at 5 a.m.

Mr. Maurice Lovelock's well known radio store was a mass of flames; half an hour after the arrival of the brigade, the fire was under complete control. The fire had a firm grip on the building when it was discovered, and by the time the brigade arrived it was blazing fiercely.

The fire originated in a room underneath the building, and as the flames and dense smoke billowed out into the night, many residents feared a repetition of the disastrous Percy Hayes fire of some 30 years ago, when the shopping centre from Petrich's corner to where R. E. Jones's fruit shop 1s situated, was gutted.

Under instruction from the captain, Fireman Joe Luff, the brigade, leaving all doors and windows in Sheridan street closed, tackled the fire at the seat of trouble at the back underneath the building. As flames swept through Lovelock's shop, and on, in to the rear portion of the Constance Worth Frock Salon, owners and occupiers of shops in the vicinity feared the worst. But so effective was the method of attack employed by the firemen that within half an hour all danger had passed, and the big fire was under control.

Biggest loss was sustained by Mr. M. Lovelock, whose business premises and stock of refrigerators, radios, and a large assortment of electrical goods were completely ruined. The building is owned by Messrs. Castrission Bros. Damage to the Constance Worth Frock Salon was not nearly as great as that suffered by Lovelock's Radio. Smoke damage was caused to some of the fixtures and fittings, in Mr. F. A. Dodds's office— the solicitor's business house adjoins the frock salon.

Mr. Jack Patterson, who occupies a room underneath the building, escaped uninjured. Dame Rumor had it that Mr Patterson had a miraculous escape, but he got out of his room without difficulty. The cause of the fire is unknown. [Cootamundra Herald, Friday 15 June 1951: Trove Digitised Newspapers]

Obituary Maurice Lovelock 1919 - 1980 Courtesy Gundagai Paper 23rd October, 1980

The death occurred suddenly on Thursday night of one of Gundagai's best known men, Maurice Clive Lovelock. He was 61 years of age. Maurie Lovelock was a popular figure in Gundagai and his sudden passing came as a great shock to his wide circle of friends.

Born at Junee, son of the late Reg and Elsie Lovelock, Maurie came to Gundagai in the post war years. He started an Electrical Sales and Repair business, firstly in premises now occupied by Bill Schmidt Agencies and then in the remodelled premises - now Lovelock's Radio.

The new business suffered a setback early, when one of Gundagai's worst fires broke out. But Maurie Lovelock recovered from that setback, shrugging off his setback problems with the courage which was typical of the man.

He is survived by his wife Norma, and children Ian (Sydney), Marion (Mrs Healey) (Sydney), Lorraine (Bathurst), Margaret (Sydney). Brothers and sisters are Lance, Ken , Duncan, Gwen, Jean, Joyce. Maurice was a great husband and father, devoted to his closely knit family. He was a strong and highly regarded member of Gundagai Rotary Club and was President some years ago.

At the time of his death he was chairman of the Gundagai District Old People's Welfare Committee. He was a talented man with paintbrush or drawing pencil and was attending a class at Tumut Tech. College when his death came with dramatic suddenness.

The service was conducted by Rev. Bill Wright of the Uniting Church, Gundagai on Saturday morning following which interment took place at Junee Cemetery.

With the Rotary Club he spent time in New Guinea and Burma building homes as part of its overseas commitment.
