Shared note

Copied from newspaper cutting (first bit missing) found in Nana's box:

....., North End. General conditions were not so hygenic as today and required a lot more supervision. Mr Lovelock has also worked under the Drugs Act and Workshops Acts.

The day of Mr Lovelock's retirement coincided with his 65th birthday, and there was a pleasant little ceremony in the afternoon in the Medical Officer of Health's department, the Medical Officer (Dr A Mearns Fraser), on behalf of the department, presenting Mr Lovelock with a handsome gold watch that bore his monogram and was suitably inscribed.

Dr Fraser said the retirement of Mr Lovelock broke one of the old links that connected him with the old staff in office when he (the speaker) was appointed as Medical Officer in 1896. For 43 years Mr Lovelock had rendered faithful service to the Corporation, and he had always carried out his duties to the best of his ability and with a willing and cheerful spirit. All the members of the department regretted his leaving, and expressed their best wishes for health and happiness in the future. Mr Lovelock left behind him not only old fellow officers, but friends who entertained for him warm affection and regard.

Mr C W Hall, Chief Inspector, said that Mr Lovelock had ridden the race well and passed the post in safety. Best wishes were also expressed Mr H G Gray, chief clerk, and Miss D M Poulson, health visitor, and Mr Lovelock briefly returned thanks for their gift and their kindness. The watch would always remind him of many pleasant days spent in the office.

Witnesses to wedding included Lucy Johnson and C L Gardner

Note

According to an entry in 'The Hampshire Telegraph' of 2 April 1887 Herbert and Ann (sic) were delivered of a stillborn daughter on 30 March.
