Shared note

James apparently came from a large family of nine including himself, not all of whom had very long lives. He had many aunts and uncles living in Berkshire & Oxfordshire at Watlington, Abingdon, Wallingford and Henley-on-Thames. Some were farmers; most were malsters, brewers, innkeepers, butchers, dealers and shopkeepers.

His first child Jane was born in 1835 at Wallingford. His next child, John Frederick was born at Aston Upthorp. Both Jane and John were baptised at Watlington in Oxfordshire on 20th October, 1839.

Soon after his family set sail for America where he appears to have initially lived with a Quaker group in Pennsylvania.

In the 1840 census, the family was living at Williamsburg, King's County, New York. James was listed as a butcher in the 1852 New York Directory with a butchery business situated at 522 Pearl St, Trinity Place, Manhattan.

James' third son, George, appears in the 1850 US census aged 4. In the family bible (with Tom Lovelock) their 4th child, Thomas Henry is noted as born 1852.

By 1853 the family had joined a convoy of nine ships leaving New York for Australia, arriving Melbourne 12th August, 1853 according to the library at Bacchus Marsh and birthday recorded in family bible. A passenger list for the ship on which they emigrated has not been located, however John Frederick, their son, who was then 14 years old, gave the date of arrival to the compiler.

In November of the same year, their fifth son, Charles Wright Lovelock was born in Little Bourke Street, Melbourne, Victoria, Australia.

James had the first butchery shop at Grant Street, Alexandra (Redgate), Victoria until 1859. He was in partnership in the butcher's shop with John Hewlett (who married Emma Abigail Wilson). The butcher's shop was still there in 1980.

Redgate was located in the Goulburn River Valley, an area enthusiastically taken up as sheep runs after Major Mitchell opened up the area in 1836.

The butcher's shop did extremely well supplying meat to the miners during the local gold rush. (Gold was discovered at Redgate in 1857 and Alexandra became the main town. It was on the direct route to Melbourne.) Prices at the time were:

1 sheep = 10 shillings a quarter sheep = 4 shillings and three pence 14 pounds of Roast Beef = 5 shillings and six pence 23 pounds of corned beef = shillings and nine pence 19 pounds of mutton side = four shillings and nine pence

In 1859 James was at Middleton Creek when his daughter Martha Eliza was born (District of Hepburn). James left butchering to work on properties as a miller and sometimes a butcher around the Daylesford area, where he was also a miner. [Gwen Eastment]
