Hampshire - Suffolk - Rutland - Herefordshire Tree

RL 17/6/07: The earlier HTML version of the tree (Graham's) had Louise born Crawley, Hants 1861/2, presumably from the 1901 census entry, although the 1891 entry would suggest 1864/5. (Locating Lovelocks born in Suffolk (i.e. some of George and Louise's children), following Nigel Gerdes' Sept 2005 email was, I believe, the origin of the Hants/Hereford link.) The GRO death entry (3Q 1937) believed to be her includes 'age 74', implying birth in 1862/3.

Searching (2/7/06) for a birth of a Louise ..??.. in Winchester RD 1859/62 incl. [and now (22/8/07) 1857/66 incl.] threw up only one possibility: Louise Pauline Heller 3Q 1860, 2c 84. [FreeBMD gives the page no. as 81, with no indication of uncertainty; however, viewing the image via BMDIndex shows the page no. clearly as 84. While the page no. on the image viewed via FreeBMD does look to be 81 at first sight, closer inspection reveals that the "1" is a bit fuzzy along the left edge and 'could very well' be a "4".]

The IGI has what appears to be this birth (although it does not appear in the LDS British Vital Records 2nd edn): Louise Pauline Heller 10 Jun 1860 East View, Winchester, Hampshire, England, parents Edward Paul Heller and Julia née Blake.

An 1861 census entry (RG9 691 F100 P18) for Winchester, St Thomas, 4 East View, shows the family with Louisa aged 10 months, her father Edward (30) a Professor of German at Winchester College, born Wurtemberg [sic], her mother Julia (38) born Cowes IoW, and an elder brother and sister - plus 2 servants. I can't find her in later censuses; nor is there a marriage of a Louise Heller on FreeBMD.

The IGI birth record for Louise Pauline Heller also shows a date of death of 18 August 1949, which if correct means this is not our girl (assuming the 1937 GRO entry does refer to George's wife Louise/a). There's no Louise Heller death listed during 1949 on BMDIndex. An "All types" [of BMDs] FreeBMD search (9/3/07) for 1860/1960 on Louise Heller found only that same birth plus another of a Louise Augusta G C Heller in St.Geo. East RD, 4Q 1890, 1c 316.

Note that the FamilySearch entry records the parents as John and Betsy.

FreeBMD has no marriage for George J Lovelock and Louise (or Louisa).

RL 9/3/07:

Have so far found no Crawley marriage record for George J L and Louise/a?? at HRO. However, there are no Crawley Marriage Records there as yet later than 1836 - probably still held by the Church (?).

The following three notes [Graham's?] appeared in the previous HTML version - [minor additions by RL 3/07 are in square brackets]: (i) A George James Lovelock married either Annie Curtis or Edethea Robinson in the Lincoln RD in 2Q 1886, ref 7a 971, but there are no clues as to what happened to him then. (ii) A George James Lovelock also married in the Caistor RD [Lincolnshire] in 2Q 1902 [ref 7a 1471 - Annie Elizabeth Starkey or Lilian Wilkinson; the other male on the page is John James A Bamford], and this (of course it may be coincidentally) was followed by the births in the Caistor RD of Frances Mary and George Edward in 3Q 1903, ref 7a 644, and of Ruth in 1Q 1907, ref 7a 640. George Edward died in 3Q 1906, still in the Caistor RD, ref 7a 398. (iii) The only other entries from the general area are the birth and death [age 0] of Editha H Lovelock in 3Q 1910, refs 7a 489 and 7a 252, in the Lincoln RD.

I [RL] noted at some stage [see my email 2/7/06] the lack of a Louise or Louisa in any of the FreeBMD George L marriage records 1882/86, including that of a George James L married in Lincoln RD 2Q 1886 [see above]; searched again today (9/3/07) 1881/1892 with the same result.

However, searching (2/7/06) for a birth of a Louise ..???.. in Winchester RD 1859/62 threw up one 'possibility' in Louise Pauline Heller born 3Q 1860, 2c 81. [17/6/07: See also note to Louise/a's birth]. [22/8/07: Search repeated for 1857/66 {age variation 1891/1901 census entries} with same result; FreeBMD coverage is now virtually 100% for these years (except 1857).]

{Must peruse Crawley PRs some time. However (NB) some relevant ones not at HRO (e.g. no marriages post 1836) - contact the vicar?! This ref. Graham 27/6/06: "We know [RL: presumably from 1891 and/or 1901 census entries then GRO data] that George J (a grandson of Thomas and Olive) and Louise (or Louisa)'s son William was born in 2Q 1887 in Crawley ... ... There is no Free BMD record of their marriage, but since she was born in the village herself I would hope the records might contain something to help us."} In 1911 George declared that he and Louisa (sic) had been married for 24 years, ie since 1886 or 1887.

Louisa was still unmarried in 1881, employed as a Domestic Nurse for William Green, the Rector of Avington.

RL 28/6/07: The above is an agreed retranscription following an exchange with Graham 20/23 Feb 2007. I'd at first been unable to locate the entry via S&N/'The Genealogist'; it transpired that 'Lovelock' had been mistranscribed as 'Lowcock' there [leading to my locating quite a number of further instances of this and advising S&N accordingly, for corrections to be made. In my view the images concerned were relatively clear as regards the surname being 'Lovelock'.] Concerning the address for the entry, Graham (22/2/07) reported: "With regard to the 'scribble' above the address I couldn't make out whether it was an Enumerator's afterthought with respect to the name of the wood, or some other scribble that was meaningful only to the Enumerator. I've now referred to a map of the area, which I should have done before, and I think we can make a reasonable guess, although the image is still not clear enough to be absolutely sure. The next address on the page is 'Kentwell Hall', which is still there. Less than a kilometre away is 'Stanstead Great Wood', however, looking at the image again although the word does appear to start with St I have to say it looks more like Steadham than Stanstead."

RL 28/6/07: Above agreed retranscription [minor changes only] followed email exchanges with Graham 13/14 Feb and (esp.) 5/8 March 2007. James (5/3) queried "why the on-line 1901 census should give the "Civil Parish" as How Caple Entire, whereas Ancestry gives it as Brockhampton." He'd "checked on Genuki, and both Brockhampton and How Caple are recorded as "Township or Civil Parish" in the Ross Registration District of Herefordshire." GL and RL explored census images, maps, and local 'administrative arrangements", then settled on the above rendering of the address for the entry.
