Note

William's short existence was revealed by an item in the 'Hampshire Telegraph' of 24 December 1880. This reported that an inquest had been held by the Coroner, W H Garrington, on 22 December at the Mitre Tavern in Kent Street, Portsea, on the body of William Lovelock, a child five months old.

William had been taken to bed on the evening of 19 December by his mother, who placed him 'on the outer side' (presumably of the bed) with her arm around him. On awaking at half-past six the next morning she found him feeling so cold, Mr Sall, Surgeon, was called, and confirmed that death had taken place several hours previously. He stated that the child was a very fine one, that the body was well nourished, and attributed death to suffocation from being overlaid. The Jury returned a verdict of 'Accidental death'.
