| Note | In an e-Mail of 4 Oct 2012 Graham Lovelock stated: ''In June 2009 changes were made to the Tangley Tree following the acquisition by Shelagh Lovelock of a copy of the marriage certificate for Henry William Lovelock and Ada Stringle (in 1902). This declares Henry William's father to be William Lovelock, whereas the Tangley Tree previously showed him erroneously as the son of John and Emma Lovelock. Checking Free BMD in the period 1870 - 1890 shows the births of 3 Henry William Lovelocks: in 1872 (Mile End), 1881 (Croydon) and 1890 (Bromley). The marriage entry in 1902 for Henry William Lovelock and Ada Stringle gives their ages as 21 and 20 respectively, and Henry William's father is quite clearly identified as William Lovelock, a Labourer, and Ada's as Joseph Stringle, a Tailor. Turning to the 1901 Census entry for 15 Charlotte Terrace, Islington reveals a household headed by Joseph Stringle, a Tailor, and it includes his daughter Ada aged 19 and a Boarder by the name of Henry Lovelock. This is clearly the couple who married in 1902 (and they both gave the address as their 'Residence at the time of Marriage', which confirms it), BUT Henry's birthplace is quoted as Islington. Going back to Free BMD the ONLY birth of a Henry in the Islington RD in the period 1879 - 1884 is of a Henry Charles, registered in Jan-Mar 1882. Henry Charles was indeed the son of William Lovelock, who was recorded in 1891 (32 Payne St, Islington) as a Labourer, and in 1901 (7 Thomas St, Clerkenwell) as a Builder's Labourer. My contention is, although there is no obvious explanation for how it happened, that the man who married Ada Stringle MUST have been Henry CHARLES Lovelock, despite what it says on his Marriage Certificate, and despite him signing himself as Henry William." |
