Deathyes

Shared note: RL 13/5/05 (emailed this to James): Having failed to find death entries in Free BMD for my Pocock great aunts I remembered the GRO info. on the Lovelock site and had a look there. Now that I know the Christian names of those concerned (Anna Isabel etc) and already having known that Anna at least died in Devizes in the 1950s, I readily found the record, and indeed William O's (also reg'd Devizes, which I hadn't known/recalled). Having decided on the basis of recently collected data that 'Queen' must have been Eliza not Martha Ann, and not being sure whether she too died in Devizes - certainly both elderly sisters lived there with one of my aunts and family, but according to recent discussion with Basil she returned to Watchfield after Jo (Anna)'s death - imagine my alarm when I found a death entry for Martha A. Lovelock 1st quarter 1956, Devizes, vol. 7c p. 568, heightened by the fact that the age cited was 78, which Martha A Pocock having been born 3rd quarter 1879 is spot on. But - no doubt you've guessed it - that familiar confusion of maiden/married names; Martha A Pocock did not marry a Lovelock - or did she!?!!

Whereabouts on census night of David Basil, Son, born about Aug 1879, not known.

Census

Helen Norton (24/4/05) supplied the following re. 1891 census entry she located: David, 45; Anna, 45; Thomas H., 19; Eliza, 17; George W., 15; David B., 13; Anna I., 9; Florence E., 6; Harry, 4; Martha A, 4(?)*. Helen reported 'all born Watchfield, except Anna born Breamore'** - i.e. as per 1881 entry.

  • I'm not sure whether the '(?)' is in the original or Helen's. Age 'should' be 11. ** Actually Helen reported 'Braemore' as Anna's birthplace - whose slip?!
Marriage

5/05 RL I'm not absolutely sure that this is my Great Aunt's husband/marriage - even if Eliza was my Great Aunt 'Queen' (see general note to William Oliver Lovelock), but it fits with other info. I have.

Census

Henry TAYLOR;Head;29;Bricklayer;Rochester, Kent Eliza TAYLOR;Wife;27;;Watchfield, Berks

19/4/05 RL Having verbal info. from my Uncle Basil (Lovelock) that Great Aunt 'Queen' spent her married life in London, and having found a likely marriage registered in Medway in 1897, I located an Eliza Taylor in Bermondsey aged 27. Of 9 possible Henry Taylors in Bermondsey, one was aged 29 and born in Rochester, and therefore a likely candidate.

20/5/05 Located what I believe to be the appropriate entry in 1901 Census On-Line.

Shared note

5/05 RL I'm not absolutely sure that this is my Great Aunt Queen (see general note to William Oliver Lovelock). I'd originally gone for Martha Ann as the 3rd Pocock sister in the photograph I have of my Grandmother (Florence Ethel) with Great-Aunts Jo (Anna Isabel) and Queen, but I recently (18/5/05) spotted Eliza Taylor as a witness (along with Kate Berrett) to William Oliver L's second marriage (to Jo), i.e. married sisters of the bride and groom; then found an Eliza Pocock/Henry Taylor marriage in Kent (Medway) in 1897. 11/5 Basil confirmed my recollection that he'd said Queen married a Harry Taylor - who he understood worked at the Tower of London. Apparently they did not have children. Queen lived at Clench with Bill and Jo when I was about 5, then later with Aunt Jane (Isabel Kate) in Devizes,
