| Marriage | Notes by Graham Lovelock, email message 12 Mar 2005: In my previous message with various 'Items for consideration' I wrote a sentence beginning 'Vashti being a unique name in Lovelock annals, I believe, ...'. Not so, I now discover - there was a Vashti Charlotte B Lovelock born in St Saviour, Southwark, in 2Q 1888 (only recorded on the Free BMD image, there's no transcription). She doesn't appear under that name in the 1901 data we have for London, but may well turn up in 1891 in due course. There were still a number of Lovelocks in St Saviour in 1901, of whom only 42 year old Sarah looks a likely candidate for the mother. However, there is another, I think stronger, possibility: the family of Charles James L in Hackney in 1901 includes a daughter 'Bessie', born in either 1888 or 1889, at Southwark. Free BMD has no record of the birth of a Bessie: I have reviewed the images, not just the transcribed information. And of course, 'Bessie' was apparently Charles James' first daughter, and his mother's name was Vashti ... Moreover, Veshti (sic) Charlotte B Lovelock married Albert William Drage in 2Q 1908 in Hackney. I think there's enough there to make a reasonable assumption. In 3Q 1911 Vashti B Drage, mother Lovelock, was born in Hackney. Charles James looks to have been married in 4Q 1887 in the St Saviour, Southwark RD, but Free BMD does not identify any likely candidate for his wife, who was also recorded in 1901 as 'Bessie'. Perhaps it was a pet name? Further comment by Graham Lovelock on 15 May 2009: The Free BMD transcript for the 1887 marriage in St Saviour RD being now complete, Charles James' wife is identified as Susannah Maria B Rhodes, the 'B' presumably standing for Bessie. |
