Shared note

On Tuesday 4 January 1921 'The Evening Telegraph' reported "A tragic story has just come to light at Hastings. On Sunday evening about seven o'clock Mr William Lovelock, a retired bank official, was walking along the front with his unmarried daughter, Miss Dorothy Lovelock (36), when some heated words are said to have passed between them because the daughter had lost her purse. With the remark 'I can't stand any more of this' Miss Lovelock rushed across the shingle into the water. The father states that he followed as quickly as his age would allow, and waded into the rough sea, but the waves knocked him over. When he got up he could not see his daughter, and he summoned the assistance of a boatman, the police, and Coastguards, but so far no trace of Miss Lovelock has been found. It is feared that she was drowned, but it is possible that she got out of the water, and is in hiding. She had been somewhat depressed of late."
